Here are some great places that I’d stay in if I was just moving to Vienna for the first time.
1st District – Innere Stadt
1st District is an old city and has magnificent architecture from the 19th century. It also has a lot of corporate headquarters and tourist destinations.
Over 17,000 people call Innere Stadt home, but it’s really expensive to rent an apartment there. If you can afford it, though, it’s magnificent with lots of restaurants and cafes.
One of the problems is that many landmarks are priced and designed for tourists. If you want a district with more local traffic, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

The Leopoldstadt is perfect for families or people who like quirky and fun neighborhoods. The district’s population is quite large at 103,000 people, so you’ll always be able to find people to enjoy your time with.

4th District – Wieden
Weiden is a hipster paradise with vegan supermarkets and fun bars and cafes. You’ll never run out of things to do, making Wieden perfect for families without children.
Wieden is another downtown district, so transportation is easy, and it’s filled with artists and students. Student and artist districts are always valued because of low prices and trendy locations.
Coffee and restaurants are a bargain in this district. Students don’t cook very much, so you’ll see large crowds of them looking for food in the local restaurants and shops. There are lots of cool shops too, so it’s a great place to take a walk and do some shopping.
