What Size Are Nails For Design?

The length of the nails or the most common nail sizes include 6d, 8d, 10d, or 16d. Here, the letter d stands for pen. The diameters or centimeters’ size vary between the size of the nail. So, the next question comes the way to differentiate between the different lengths of nails.

If you want to do the job correctly, you have to choose the length of the nail. Here, it is best to apply the rule of thumb, which states that the length of the nail you choose should be three times larger than its thickness. Meanwhile, long nails end up cracking wood. That is why keep a note about the interaction of wooden parts. Now, take a look at the different nail size designs below!

16d nails

16d nails or 16-penny nails are the most commonly used. These types of nails are three and a half inches long. One can use 16d nails to do projects related to building like a mold. Meanwhile, there are two types of 16d nails, which are sinking and common. So, let us clarify this difference!

A 16d siker measures a diameter of 0.148 inches and a length of 3.25 inches. On the other hand, the 16d typically rises to a height of 3.5 inches with a diameter of 0.162 inches. The two types are similar when it comes to body size. The main difference is that the sinking nails show a waffle-like shape on the surface while the usual ones have a smoother surface. Apart from these options, 16d sinkers are good for design. When it comes to vinyl, cement, and epoxy coating, these nails slip better in wood.

10d nails

If you are looking for something to cut doors, then 10d nails would be the best nails on it. These nails do not penetrate deep into the jointed planks. Meanwhile, you can even use these 10d nails to join the flat board area. The length of these nails is about 3 inches and 0.148 inches in diameter. One cannot replace these nails with a smaller diameter than that. If you are using 10d nails, the area should be three times more than the diameter of the nail. Therefore, you should not place these nails in such a way that they do not extend further than ¾ inches.

What Size Are Nails For Designing Walls?

It is especially important to consider the size of the nail when making the interior walls. If the nail is too thick or too long, you may experience difficulty driving it and it may even crack wood. Meanwhile, thin or short nails would not be able to do the job. If you are looking for high quality nails, then a 16d or 3½-inch nail is the one you need.

Here, 16d nails are of two types, which are common nails and sinks. Ordinary nails have a flat surface, while the display sinkers are shaped at the top which helps prevent the hammer from slipping. Again, standard nails come with a diameter of 0.162 inches while sinkers show a 0.148-inch diameter.

Ordinary nails are strong and durable, but manufacturing requires 16d sinkers. These sinkers have epoxy or vinyl coating, which helps them to slide through the wood easily. Its an important thing to think about as you want to nail a lot of nails.
