How To Get Whiter Teeth At Home

Most of us would like to have whiter teeth, but with such a huge selection of kinds of whitening toothpaste and teeth-whitening products to use at home, how do you know what will work? In this post, we will cover the essential ways to get healthier and whiter teeth.

How To Have Naturally Whiter Teeth

Here are a few simple things you can do at home to help keep your teeth white:

Use an electric toothbrush — Brush your teeth twice a day using an electric toothbrush. You don’t need to spend a fortune on one, as plenty are available for under £20.

Here is some advice from Gareth Edwards BDS, principal Dentist at Smile Stories cosmetic dentists in Bournemouth:

“Using an electric toothbrush will not make yellow and discoloured teeth whiter, but they can remove more plaque than a manual toothbrush. This will help to prevent further plaque building up and staining from food and drink, which makes teeth look yellow and discoloured. When you are looking for a budget electric toothbrush, I would choose one with a round brush head. If you can afford one, your best buy is an electric sonic toothbrush.”

Floss daily — Flossing helps to remove more tartar and plaque than just brushing your teeth. If you can manage to floss twice daily, then this is going to make the most difference, but the good news is even flossing once a day before bed can really help to keep teeth clean and prevent plaque build-up. If you don’t like string or tape floss, try using a dental floss pick or interdental brushes. You could also invest in a water flosser, also called a water pik.

Avoid dark drinks — Darker-coloured drinks such as cola, coffee, and red wine can all stain teeth. When you do want to enjoy drinks that can stain teeth, chew sugar-free gum and always brush your teeth as soon as possible.

Teeth Whitening Products Vs Professional Clean And Polish

Teeth whitening products you can buy for home use have very limited effects. The main cause of yellow or discoloured teeth is a build-up of plaque, and teeth whitening products will not remove it. This can be due to poor oral hygiene or incorrect brushing and flossing techniques. Once plaque has hardened into tartar, the fastest and most effective way to get whiter teeth is to visit the dentist for a professional hygiene visit, often referred to as a professional clean and polish. This can help in two ways:

  1. Bleeding gums from plaque build-up can discolour teeth, and a professional clean and polish will help to reduce and prevent bleeding gums.
  2. Additionally, teeth often look whiter when plaque build-up is removed.

Can You Whiten Teeth With Baking Soda?

In addition to regular brushing and flossing, you can also use baking soda to help keep teeth clean and plaque-free. Baking soda is a gentle abrasive that can also help to remove stains on your teeth. To use it, wet your toothbrush and dip it in baking soda. Then, brush your teeth as normal. You can do this once or twice a week.

Can You Whiten Teeth With Hydrogen Peroxide?

Another way to get whiter teeth is by using hydrogen peroxide. This is not recommended, as even a low percentage of hydrogen peroxide can irritate gums and may damage fillings and crowns.

The key to keeping teeth cleaner and whiter for longer is to constantly follow a good oral hygiene routine and have a professional dental hygiene checkup every six months. With proper care and a good dentist, you can achieve the beautiful, white smile you’ve always wanted!
