It’s the bi-yearly event that the majority of university students wish they could bi-pass.

Often associated with all-night library sessions, a little too much caffeine and a depreciated social life, exam season is all part of the university journey.

We know it can be a little overwhelming, which is why we’ve put together these top tips to help you conquer this exam season:

  • Manage your time

As soon as you get your exam schedule, write it down and pin it up. It will help you prioritise which exams you need to do the most studying for first.

Create yourself a revision timetable to structure your days and help boost your productivity. Don’t forget to include breaks to give your brain and body a chance to reboot.

Using a planner can also help you keep track of any other deadlines, dates and times so you never forget anything important.

  • Switch up your study spot

Some people find they can study best in the library, whereas others prefer their bedroom.

Switch up your spot to find what works best for you. If you find yourself procrastinating in the library, head to a cafe and see how much you get through there instead.

Remember your headphones, and play some calm music while studying in public to block out some of the distractions.

  • Make the most of your lecturers

Most lecturers will have office hours in which you can make an appointment or turn up to.

If you’re struggling with a topic or getting your head around something in particular, don’t be afraid to go ask questions.

If you can’t make their office hours, send them over a quick email asking for some clarity, they’re there to help you succeed!

  • Work on your notes

Focus on understanding your lecture notes. Compared to just memorising a few facts, understanding them means you can apply the knowledge to new scenarios (which most exams will require!)

Identify key pieces of information by highlighting key words and frameworks. Depending on your learning style, create placards, or reformat text into visual cues such as charts and diagrams to help you digest the information.

  • Stay Social

It’s probably best to give wild parties and nights out a miss during exam season but socialising is still important.

Meeting up with friends is a great stress reliever. Ask them how their studying is going, they might even have a couple of helpful tips to add to this list too.

Planning ahead with your friends, post-exams is also a good way to help you get through your revision. Having something to look forward to can help prevent burn out and motivate you to get the work done.

  • Don’t skip sleep

All night study sessions aren’t all they’re made up to be. When you’re tired, you’re more likely to be unfocussed and less likely to retain information.

Stick to your revision schedule (Top tip 1*) and know when to switch off.  You’ll find yourself more productive after a full nights sleep. You can even think ahead before exam season and  choose student housing in Leicester in a convenient location. Being close to your University, means you can avoid the stress of travel, and even get some extra time to rest up.
