A recent survey has revealed that embroidery flowers are the most googled design in the United States. The research was conducted by embroidery experts Design Bundles, who analysed the search volumes of various embroidery designs in November and December 2021 and January 2022.
The popularity of flower embroidery patterns is most likely due to the generalised term. Crafters may be unsure of the type of flower that they want to embroider, so they Google flower patterns as a whole. However, some specific types of flowers did receive a large volume of online searches in the three month period, including roses, sunflowers and sweet peas.
In each of the three months, embroidery flowers were googled 12,100 times, which was over double the number that sweet pea embroidery, the second-most popular design, received. Sweet pea embroidery had a search volume of 5,400 searches in each of the three months. The delicate flowers are often associated with blissful pleasure, good wishes and friendship. They are often found in pastel shades, such as pinks, lilacs and white.
Logo and rose embroidery were each googled 2,900 times over the three-month period, which places them in the joint third position of the most-searched-for embroidery patterns. Roses are most popular around Valentine’s Day, as they symbolise love and beauty.
Companies and schools often have embroidered logos on their uniforms so that they can be easily identified. Some fans also like to embroider the logos from favourite pop culture icons onto their personal items to demonstrate their admiration for various bands, television shows and celebrities.
Crafters may also want to embroider logos onto their belongings in honour of specific events, such as the Olympics, or for special occasions such as Stag and Hen nights. The logo can be designed yourself or by a company that specialises in graphics. This can then be used to create a personalised embroidered piece.
Roses weren’t the only plant design to appear on the most-searched-designs list. Sunflowers had the fifth-highest search volume with 2,400 Google searches in each of the three months. Leaf embroidery followed with 1,900 online searches in the analysed months, whilst cactus embroidery patterns were the twelfth most googled design with an average of 1,300 searches each month. This means that cactus embroidery was the least googled plant pattern in the survey.
Butterfly embroidery patterns had the same volume of searches as leaf patterns, with an average of 1,900 searches each month. These patterns only received an average of 300 more Google searches each month than bee embroidery, which averaged 1,600 Google searches over the three-month period.
Embroidered objects such as cushion covers, bags and pictures can make a good personalised gift. Crafters may choose to use a simple pattern as an embellishment, or create a more complex piece. Some of the patterns featured on this list can be combined to make a picture, such as the flowers, butterflies and bees.
The only brand name to feature on the list is Nike, an American company that is most famous for its sports footwear and apparel. Nike’s world-famous logo is a stylized tick, which is embroidered onto the various items that they sell. It seems that the logo has inspired crafters to try their hand at replicating the logo onto their own items, as there were an average of 1,600 online searches for Nike embroidery from November 2021 to January 2022.
Four embroidery patterns received 1,600 online searches over the course of the three recorded months. Along with bee and Nike, the other two designs to rank in eighth place were panda and name embroidery patterns.
Pandas were the only animal design to feature on the most-searched pattern list. Thanks to their basic black and white appearance, the native Chinese animal is likely to prove an easier pattern to master than more complex designs that feature lots of different colours.
Parents of young children often embroider their names onto their belongings so that they don’t get lost so easily. Embroidered names are also a good option for members of clubs and societies so that they can differentiate their kits and uniforms from other people’s. They are usually sewn with a single embroidery thread, rather than a combination of colours like the majority of other designs featured on the list.
The table below shows the United States’ most searched for embroidery designs from November 2021 to January 2022.
|Pattern||November 2021||December 2021||January 2022||Rank|
|Sweet Pea Embroidery||5,400||5,400||5,400||2|
What are the different embroidery stitches?
There are various types of stitches that can be used to create different effects and patterns. Embroidery projects are usually worked on materials such as linen, canvas and cotton. Some of the most common and basic stitches are:
- Satin stitch
- Detached chain stitch
- Feather stitch
- Straight stitch
- Split stitch
- Stem stitch
- Running stitch
Stitches such as stem, French knots and woven wheel are good choices for embroidery flowers whilst satin and straight stitches can create blocks of colour in neat sections. They are produced by weaving the needle in and out of the fabric in a certain way to create intricate knots and patterns.
Different stitches create different textures on the fabric. For example, the turkey and French knot stitches are more 3-D than stitches such as the chain and feather stitches. This can create a layered picture as each stitch is sewn on top of the previous stitch until you are left with the desired image and texture.
Embroidery stitches are most commonly sewn using a pattern template in a similar way to cross-stitch. This is so that you have something to act as a guideline and you are able to see where the pattern will be on the fabric, along with how big the finished piece will be. An embroidery hoop is a popular option for a hand embroidery project as it keeps the material taut so that the embroidery floss can be easily sewn into the material.
